Despite the fact that Obama banned requests to mine for uranium in the Grand Canyon national park last year, Energy Fuels Resources is set to go ahead and reopen an old mine located just six miles from the popular South Rim entrance.

The EPA’s latest assessment states that the development of the mine would destroy as much as 4,800 acres of wetlands, and nearly 100 miles of streams, including the natural habitat of the 37.5 million sockeye salmon, the world’s largest wild salmon population) that travel each year to the Bristol Bay watershed to spawn.

Greece: Skouries Gold Mine: Clashes between residents & police, tear gas in school.

Broader clashes between angry residents and police started on Tuesday morning in Ierissos, Chalkidiki, the area where the disputed gold mining triggers tension. Greek media report that the residents started the incidents when they attempted to hinder police units from searching in some homes of the area.

A Gang of Greek Activists Torched the Skouries Gold Mine.

In 2003 Hellenic Gold, followed by El Dorado, obtained the rights to mine the billions’ (£7.8 billions’) worth of gold and copper snoozing beneath the mountain area. The deal saw the Greek state receive just �11 millions’ (£9.5 millions’) worth of compensation for the mines, and, in addition to losing the government some money they could have probably done with, pissed off all the local residents.
